    Bob Dylan: Modern Times
Incredibly, with over 40 albums, this is one of his best. Blues and ballads, lyrically deep and playful, played by his tight touring band, the more I listen the more I like it. (*****)

Michael in Repose, Dec. 4-6, 2006

Dear Friends:

Attached are 11 photos I asked our friend, Pete, to take of Michael while he was still here at our house.  I figured once Michael's body was gone, I would be searching for him and would need to *see* him daily. These photos have served me well over these last five weeks.  I have a slide show that runs in the background on our computer and often during the day, I wander over to the display screen, magnify the images, to get 'up close' and try to take in as much detail as a two-dimensional screen can provide.  Sometimes it's consoling - sometimes not.  Rest assured that Michael is safe, at peace, filled with love, and free of all suffering.  Michael practiced death and life through breath.  He often repeated these wishes to himself to help him embrace the life he was living:  "May I be safe; may I be at peace; may I be filled with love; may I be free of all suffering".  Something we can all live with.

There will be an *informal* memorial gathering of friends on Sunday, January 28, 2007 from 2-5pm @ 8th Street Dance Studio, 2525 8th Street (between Dwight and Parker), Berkeley, CA.  Food, music, dance, photos, and spoken word will be provided and shared by all.  Everyone is welcome to take part in any way you want.  The structure of the gathering will be loose and open-ended, with the exception of a few formal readings and dance & music solos.  Let me know if you'd like to be included on that list.

Thank you for all your love and support.

Velvet Elvis Diplomacy

Among the newspaper headlines preserved in Elvis's trophy room in Graceland, hanging next to his size-12 white leather shoes and rhinestone-studded gold lamé suit, is this gem from Aug. 12, 1957: "Rock 'n' Roll Banned, 'Hate Elvis' Drive Launched By Iran To Save Its Youth."

Radio shows lighter side of Dylan

Each week Dylan builds his show around a theme, such as the weather and drinking songs. For Mother's Day, he celebrated moms with an hour that mixed Buck Owens' "I'll Go to Church With Mama," Ruth Brown's "Mama He Treats Your Daughter Mean" and LL Cool J's "Mama Said Knock You Out."

Protest songs make waves again

"Strange Fruit is one of the most influential songs of all time. It began as a poem in the late 1930s by Abel Meeropol, a schoolteacher troubled by a photograph of a lynched black man in the American south."

40 years later, Faria's brief life still resonates

Faria "There was no doubt about Richard Fariña's sense of the dramatic. That it was evident in the way he died should not have surprised anyone, yet the folk music scene still grieves the loss, 40 years later"

Rock man Dion comes back home to the blues

Dion sequestered himself in a Miami studio with producer and drummer Bob Guertin, aka "the Hurty Gurty Man," and a couple of acoustic guitars. The resultant album is a stripped-down and gutsy blues recital in which the vocalist flexes his still-undimmed singing and picking chops on classic compositions by Johnson, Jimmy Rogers, Bo Diddley, Howlin' Wolf, Lightnin' Hopkins, Jimmy Reed and Blind Willie McTell. A version of Hank Williams' "Honky Tonk Blues" represents the country side of the blues equation.
