Tom asked me in an e-mail who it was in the latest photograph. So I thought I'd post it here. That's me at age 18 (September, 1969), playing the balalaika on the porch of a house I was crashing at in Atascadero, California. That's about midway between San Francisco and LA.
Marian Rosenzweig (known to our Atlantic City, Philadelphia, and New York band of hippy pals as Muffin, and eventually, in 1970, as "Andrew's Mother", and I, after about 100 acid trips in our $80 a month two room cockroach infested apartment over the jewelry store in Camden New Jersey, painted purple floor to ceiling, where our closest friends literally came in through the bathroom window...
Well, Marian and I eventually made our way to Haight-Ashbury in a drive-away car with some guy we met in the backyard patio of a macrobiotic restaurant we had dinner at one night while visiting Mark Gold in Greenwich Village...
Oh man, it's such a long story. I just don't have the energy to get into it. Anyway, Tom, that's me. And below is a photo of me about a year later with a couple of other fellow seekers and our teacher, Mr. Torgerson...

OK kids -- let's set the record straight.
First of all, the mysterious jar on the left is an empty bottle (probably cheap jug wine) that now contains a stalk of dried weeds.
The dude with leather hat is Mark Owen, a cool guy, originally from New Orleans, who fancied himself an advanced practitioner of Paramahansa Yogananda's Yoga, but who was really just a master of The Swindle. I'll say one thing for him though, he introduced me to Indian food and Sherman's cigarettes.
The woman's name is Avril. She was a Montessori teacher and happened to be banging Mark at the time. I am eternally grateful to her because she took care of Andrew during the year and a half it took his mother to recover from a major bout of psychosis. An another long story.
As far as Mr. Torgerson goes, that's the most incredible story of all. It includes fasting, celibacy, and vodka fueled trips to the astral plane, in addition to long meditation sessions at the Center of Light (a secret school in an abandened meat locker above Bentley's Beef Barn).

The guy with the hat and his girlfriend were studying with Torgerson (the older Buddha looking gentleman in the picture) at the time that Mike went out there.
I can't remember the guy's name, but last time I visited Mike in the 90's, the guy made a return appearance to the Berkely area (not Torgerson - he had already taken off for the astral).

I can say I knew you when. I remember being there and you and me driving to Berkeley from Atascadero after Richie Adelman and I hitchiked to your place from Tucson. What's in the jug in the lower left corner of the picture?

Godam. You mean you existed before I met you in 72? And here all this time I thought I just conjured up all y'all outta nothin. Imna hafta revise my entire understanding of the flux, once again. Anyway, you look like a respectable college coffee house folk singer in that first one, whereas you're clearly already round the bend in that second one, as Santa's helper or whatever you're up to. My favorite is still you molesting Missanny, but the archives are deep.
